Summer Reading Volunteer Program
Eligibility Requirements
Teens must be finishing grades 6-12 to volunteer in the summer
Volunteers may earn service hours for religious organizations, school requirements, scouting, or just for fun. At this time, we are unable to accept court-ordered service hours.
Expectations
Summer Reading volunteers will be expected to staff the prize booth in the months of June and July.
Participants in the summer reading challenge will check in at the Youth and Teen Services Desk and then head over to the prize booth to pick out their halfway prize and their prize for finishing the program. Volunteers are expected to facilitate this process, offering approachable and friendly service to children selecting their prizes.
Volunteers may also be asked to complete other tasks by a librarian during their shift.
While working at the booth, volunteers may not use earbuds or headphones. They also cannot use a cell phone or tablet. Reading, light conversation with a fellow volunteer at the booth, and non-messy crafts or other quiet activities are permitted.
To receive credit for their hours, volunteers must bring their form (provided by their school or organization) for a librarian to sign every day that they volunteer.
If the school or organization does not provide a form for tracking and verifying hours, a letter can be provided by the library at the end of the summer upon request.
How to Sign Up for Opportunities
Volunteers will receive an email on June 1 and June 22 with all of the available volunteering timeslots. The email on June 2 will have the opportunities for June, and the email on June 23 will have the opportunities for July. Both emails will be sent out at 4 pm.
Each shift at the booth is two hours. Those in middle school can volunteer a maximum of two hours per day, while those in high school can volunteer up to four hours per day.
Timeslots may fill quickly, so please plan accordingly. Also keep in mind that many volunteers will be accessing the same form at the same time, so we recommend submitting the form separately for each timeslot you select.
